about

The FMRJE is remarkable ensemble in many ways. But there are a few characteristics that speak in a very special way directly to my aesthetics. First, no matter who is in the band, it has a sonic character that is sustained over the decades. In other words, even though the performers have strong personal voices, those voices communicate with each other in the same way and with the same powerful aesthetics no matter what the date or context may be. And that happens because of your powerful non-verbal leadership. As you may know, some traditional bands have strong sonic identities. These identities evolve primarily because of such factors as the nature of the charts or the singular quality of the leader’s horn. But FMRJE is at heart a free ensemble that has a unique and durable face because of something invisible--the conversation of the leader’s percussion and the less-apparent aether of the band’s history and current social links.

Another factor is that, although I think you have powerful roots in the music of such people as Cecil Taylor and Bill Dixon, you and the fine band members over the years exhibit the powerful harmolodics of Ornette. Each person is doing exactly what he/she wants and whatever that is connects perfectly with whatever everyone else is doing. Somewhere Ornette is smiling.

You and the other fine musicians here carry the day, in this case in July when the Webb images were released. I confess to being a space cadet; so all the images featured in the four Hits worked so beautifully for me. Yes, Space is the place. The early display of the deep field image of the earliest explosions in the Universal furnace is my favorite of the group. It is a vast expanse of lights in which the whole image is compelling but the detail draws one into the mysteries even more so--something like what happens when I encounter one of those great, large Pollock paintings in New York. It looks large and static at first, but careful examination of even that single Webb image makes is clear that this ancient place is quite alive and dancing, particularly in those amazing gravity fields that bend the galaxies into curved slivers. Each light source doing its own thing and at the same time having a great impact on other light-forces in the furnace.

It’s a nice metaphor for what you guys are doing on July 12 in the now.

With thanks and best wishes,
